You've just had a dental crown placed and now your tooth requires root canal treatment?

Complications with a dental crown: The tooth now hurts.
Here's a scenario that as a dentist I've struggled with explaining to patients. No doubt every dentist has.
A patient comes in with a broken tooth or one that has extensive decay. The tooth clearly shows need for repair but otherwise is asymptomatic (hasn't caused any pain). I tell the patient that their tooth needs to have a dental crown made for it. The work is scheduled and begun.
[Thanks to Animated-Teeth.com for granting me permission to use their graphics. Their website has a section on it about dental crowns, including when they should be placed and how they are made.]
During those days and weeks after the initial crowning work has been performed (or even those first few days or weeks after the whole crowning process has been completed) the situation changes. Now the patient does experience symptoms with their tooth. Possibly it throbs without rhyme or reason or else it is tender when they try to chew with it. The patient now returns to my office so I can evaluate these new events.
Sometimes there are very simple fixes for a tooth like this, if one is even required at all. But in other instances it may very well be that the only determination that can be made is that tooth needs root canal treatment. So what went wrong? How does a tooth go from being just fine to now being painful and needing root canal treatment, just because a dental crown has been placed?
[If you need more information, Animated-Teeth. com has a section on their website that describes what root canal treatment is and what takes place when you have endodontic therapy.]
Well, in these circumstances there certainly does seem to be some correlation between the time frame when the crowning procedure was begun and the tooth pain began. But is it simple cause and effect? Was there something about the crowning process that was done wrong? In most cases no. Here's why.
A tooth's nerve is easier to damage than you might expect.
The nerve tissue found in a tooth lies in a precarious locality, it is housed inside a hard object (the tooth). When a tooth's nerve receives insult (such as trauma from blow to the tooth, tooth fracture, the presence of a large amount of decay, or trauma from a dental procedure such as drilling out decay or trimming a tooth for a dental crown) it's natural response is to swell (just like trauma associated with twisting an ankle will make it swell). The problem with this swelling event is as follows.
Since the nerve tissue is encapsulated inside the tooth, as it swells it has no room in which to expand. As a result the swelling action (inflammation) creates a significant amount of compressive force upon the nerve tissue. The net effect of this event is that the nerve tissue's blood vessels become compressed, thus restricting their flow. This means that the vital duties that the circulation system serves (providing oxygen and nutrients, removal of excess fluids) are inhibited. The very items that are needed so the tooth can rebound and heal are stifled. Since the opposite of what is needed occurs, there is a significant risk that the nerve tissue will die.
What happened with our dental crown placement?
So, with our situation involving the new dental crown, what has caused the tooth's nerve tissue to become compromised and symptomatic now? Well, it actually could be that events that occurred during the crowning procedure did traumatize the tooth (the production of heat, friction, vibration or the advancement of bacteria toward the nerve) to the extent that they triggered the cascade of events that resulted in nerve damage. But is this what has happened in our situation here with the dental crown? Probably not.
The more likely scenario lies with the following. When a tooth undergoes a traumatic episode such as any one of those described above, the result can be a nerve that has been seriously compromised but not damaged enough to die. This nerve tissue is compromised in the sense that it is now no longer resilient enough to rebound readily from insult. In this state the nerve tissue may go ahead and die immediately (or linger and die) or else it may take one or more traumatic events (either major or minor in nature) to finally push the health of the nerve tissue over the edge. No one could ever know or predict. So, in the case of our new crown, yes the trauma from the process associated with making the crown has no doubt been enough to advance the deterioration of the nerve (hence the appearance of symptoms). But no, the trauma was not likely excessive and would not have created a problem for a tooth that was in good health. Most likely a significant traumatic event had happened to the tooth at a previous, even distant, time (hence the need for the dental crown in the first place). The act of placing the crown was simply that last traumatic straw that triggered what would have eventually happened anyway. (This exact same type of scenario can take place with new fillings, bridgework placement, teeth that are put under stress because a new partial denture places pressure on them, orthodontic treatment, or even just repeated teeth clenching and grinding. Trauma is trauma.)Articles from Dentistry-Explained: A blog about dentistry.

i had a irraigation cleaning the crown swelled an is sentive now
Thnaks for the great info. Exactly what I needed. Perfectly explained.
I am still in pain from a crown done 2 weeks ago, but at least now I understand why.
THANKS SO MUCH
dear dr, i am very afraid to visit the dentist! :( my molar has lost 1/3 of its teeth, and now, the nerve tissue has shown (i can see a swell coming out from the place where the 1/3 rotten tooth fell off). what can i do?? when food hits the swell, it really hurts!! :(
Hello! I had a crown put on my upper first molar 2 weeks ago because of "excessive decay" I suppose because I had numerous fillings on this same tooth over the past years. My dentist decided a crown was the best option. I had been having some pain on and off over the past year in this area, but nothing too bad. After having the crown put on, it is severely sensitive to hot and cold liquids/foods and it's also causing pain when chewing hard foods. I've followed up twice with my dentist already. Once was to remove excess cement and to fix my bite and the second time was today where my bite was adjusted again and some type of metal fixture was used between the teeth to smooth out the crown I think. I explained to the dentist that the pain also comes when I am flossing, but not when I get to the gum line. The pain comes when I get half way up the tooth. He said he doesn't have any definitive answers for me right now because he didn't see anything on the x-ray. He did prescribe me some antibiotics, as he said I should have been on these when I had the crown done, but for some reason I wasn't. He said I might have to be referred to an endodontist for a possible root canal if my symptoms don't improve.
My main concern is that why wasn't a root canal done in the first place? You've provided some great information, but it seems as though if a tooth has been through numerous fillings and there is more decay, then it seems to me that it might be somewhat obvious that a crown would be the "last straw" to cause the final nerve damage. Also, what's the probability of preserving the new crown during a root canal? It seems as though if I have to have a root canal, then I would have to have a completely new crown as well? Any other suggestions/comments would be much appreciated as well.
Thanks for the help!
3 wks ago I had temporary crown placed on my lower molar to treat a "large crack", which went well. Then last week, my dentist put a permanent crown. First day it was fine, I had a steak dinner, it almost felt like the food got stuck there, but nothing on flossing. Bite felt fine, normal. Next day fine, then 3. day, some minor pressure with biting. Yesterday and today it HURTS ! Intense dull pain and pressure even on a gentle tap with a finger. Unable to chew on that side at all.
I had no pain to start with, just minor sensitivity with chewing , now I can't chew at all, I am in pain and popping Motrin like candies.
Is there a possibility that a food particle somehow got under the crown ? Why was it fine for the first 2 days ? Can the bite be off and manifest now ? Can he just remove the crown and put another one there, or is it cemented for good ?
thanks
I have had 3 rootcanals prior to what is happenening so let me just say that i know what teh pain feels like when i need one. With that said, I went into the dentist with pain after my crown was placed. They tried to get it off but it was being stubborn and i was in terrible pain. He numbed me and it was still too excruciating to take off. He assumed i needed a rootcanal. Good assumption. So i went to the endo that day and he xrayed it and said that i need to go on antibiotics to bring down inflammation. I did, went back in a few days, he shot me up i dont know how many times, more than 6 and he then tested me by poking. He asked me if i felt it and i said yes so he shot me up more, again , he poked me and i still felt it a little to moderate. He said that i shouldnt be feeling anything at all with how much he numbed me. He said he coudlnt numb me anymore and i need to go on a stronger antibiotic. I am not on this antibiotic. There is another antibiotic that got me very sick that ic ant take but that i know works well on this type of inflammation. He opted for astronger amoxicillin. The pain is not letting up, it is throbbing and i feel it in my jjaw and ear. I obviously need a root canal. I am due to leave teh country on June 25th and it is now June 12. :( My first time and i cant get rid of this pain to get the root canal. I've never had this much of a problem kncking out infection in a tooth. Coudl it be that the crown is really aggrivating it since it was impossibel to get off ? I desperately need help.
Sorry, typo. I am NOW on the antibiotic and feel no relief.
i hav taken root cana treatmentn crown is put 2 days back to the same tooth. when crown was palced i dint hav any discomfort but now i feel little high n mild pain when i eat n when i clench my teeth.. so i wnted to know whether that crown should remove n plaace it again of same size or can they trim it in mouth itself?
Hi there, I recently had a new crown put on one of my back molars. This tooth had a crown on it that was about 6-7 years old, so my current dentist recommeded that I have it replaced. The new crown was permanently put on my molar about 3 weeks ago. I then started to develop extreme pain with cold and hot liquids and called the dentist but wasn't able to be seen for 3 days due to availability. In that time, the pain worsened to the point that it hurt when I pushed on the tooth. Today I finally went in to the dentist. However, since it hurt only when pushing the tooth from the bottom (no pain from the side, no pain when I floss) and the x-rays showed no infection, my dentist simply adjusted the "bite' explaining that it could be too high. He has told me that if the pain doesn't get any better that I should return. I was feeling a lot better following my appointment, the pressure, the throbbing was gone. However, now that it has been several hours, there is a dull pain. The tooth is still very sore to touch. Will this subside? Guess I am wondering how long should I wait for it to "improve?" Thanks for your help.
I recently had my front tooth crowned and experienced something very similar to chillibean. the front tooth experiences sensitivity to hot and cold, and when i push the tooth from the front, there would be a mild pain. I have been to the dentist today and he filed down my lower tooth for a better bite, which has helped in the pressure against the tooth, and he believes it will improve the pain on the crown now that theres less pressure against it. he then added some sort of coating around the crown, to seal in the tooth, which when he tested the coating, felt great, no sensitivity. he then asked me to not eat or drink for half an hour, but i've been tonguing away at the crown which left a strange taste in my mouth and I'm not sure if i've inadvertantly removed this veneer and am interested in what the dentist actually tried to do. would you be able to clarify what was the process of coating the tooth and whether i should have left it alone when i came out of the dentist?
my front teeth is broking mounths ago; wen i visited dentist the doctor says you must be your teeth be repair he said i shot or block your teeth nerve decond take medicine than repair
he is right or wrong ?
Nb my english is not well sorry
thanks doctor
I went through the most extreme pain but 2 weeks after getting a crown. The pain traveling up into my head and the whole side of my face was extremely swollen. A specialist told me I needed a root canal before crown, but my dentist told me he couldn't see an infection from the x-ray and to just get the crown. I have been searching for answers for this and a Dr sent me this great book called Root Canal Cover-Up written by George E. Meinig D.D.S but states how root canals damage your health because there is like 3 miles of tubules in the hard part of your teeth that still harbor infection and affects illness in the whole body. I I have been ill and there has been studies done of how a root canal tooth was placed in a rabbit and it got the same disease (everything from asthma to cancer) that the patient had (every time) while the patient ended up being cleared of their illness after the tooth was removed! I am still having swelling after a month and I am getting my tooth pulled! Look up the focal infection theory and get this book if you ever had root canal, a crown, or even thinking of getting it done!!
all dentissts are fucking asshole scums of the earth, ther drilling and shit, causes root canals to be needed.....never go to the bastards, unless u reallyhave pain/ which is a cavity...!!!
never do any work on a teeth unless u actually have pain!!! scums u will burn in hell u pices of shits
Well, I feel almost the same way as malik about dentists. However, I think they mean well. I had a root canal done and five years later an endodontist did a retreatment. Guess what? The tooth still was in pain months later. I changed my diet and got rid of the fluoride toothpaste and my pain and sensitivity went away. Study out all your options before drilling.
can i excersise after my gold crown molar placment?
This is why you should always clean your teeth properly as it always starts with a simple stain, which leads to gum disease, erosion and finally, tooth decay...
A good article and one which definitely gives good info on the process the dentist takes in creating dental crowns. I deal for what it involved, why it's done and what can be done to prevent it in the first place.
I have been missing teeth on the bottom left for years. My new dentist said that he could give me an extra molar through this process: He took an old crown off one of my existing teeth and then drilled that tooth and the one next to it (perfectly healthy tooth) to prepare them for crowns. So, now I have two crowns in a row with a "dangling" molar if this makes sense. I also have excruciating pain, absolutely horrible. I complained a couple of times and was told that it is "normal sensitivity". I assure you there is nothing normal about this pain. It is driving me mad. He put the permanent fixture in my mouth yesterday and now the pain is totally worse. What on earth should I do about this? He just keeps saying that it is normal sensitivity and that it will calm down. My worry is that he drilled too far down on that healthy tooth and now the roots are exposed. The other crown had already had a root canal. It can't be that one. I am in misery and pain reliever won't touch it.
What are chances of complication when replacing an old crown
Hi I have an old crown and recently the plastic cover chip off when I floss.
Because I need a partial denture my dentist sugest that the crown has to be replaced (in order for clip to work properly).
He think that regardless existing on this tooth cavity (I think on the edge of crown) root canal won't be necessary but of course can't give any assurance.
I have personal reasons not to have root canal treatment (very poor tolerance to it) and am just afraid that if something goes wrong I'll just loose this tooth.
What is the best way to go - replace crown or leave everything as it is?
Thank you very much for your answer.
I recently, about 4 days ago had my first crown done it was on my upper molar. the first day the pain was unbearable, then I woke up the next day with no pain, only when I eat or drink. it is now the 4th day and i am still having pain when I eat and drink. but not when Im resting. what could this be>? I asked the dental assistant on friday why i was in so much pain and she said they used a lazer to trim my gums and that is prob the reason why it hurts. could that be? please help me someone Im scared this pain will last for ever. If so, I probably wont be able to eat. I also dont have money for a root canal or have insurance. :(
I had a root canal and crown four months on an upper back tooth (premolar I think) due to sensitivity to heat and cold. Afterwards I had no pain. Recently, I was eating popcorn and bit a kernel. Next day I had pain on that tooth when eating/chewing and the pain has been constant for one month now every time I chew using that tooth. I saw the dentist that did the root canal and she took an x-ray and says she sees nothing wrong. She also gave me antibiotics just in case there was an infection, but they did not help. Could my tooth be cracked under the crown. Does this ever happen? The crown is fine according to the dentist. Thank you.
I had a root canal done on my #30 molar and the crown put on 4 months later. After a few weeks I get this pain that feels like an infection that comes right after I eat or drink something hot, and I went to my dentist, he couldn't find anything wrong on the xrays. Afterwards, I remember that when I got my wisdom teeth taken out, 3 of the 4 had an extra root. I wonder if it is possible that this tooth could have an extra root that couldn't be seen on x-rays????
Hello,
I have a very similar story to Jessica, although she posted a while ago. (Crown on cracked tooth, now pain on biting hard foods and cold sensitivity. Dentist suggested RCT.)
I had a crown on a back molar and am not able to bite on it now with hard foods. The pain lasts a second or two and I also have some cold sensitivity. After going back to the dentist every week for almost 2 months(!) to adjust the bite, he suggested root canal. The x-ray shows that the root is still perfectly healthy and the pain is immediate and temporary on biting (no throbbing or aching). Part of me is thinking that the dentist is saying root canal because he doesn't know what else to do. I am not keen on having a root canal just because the dentist can't figure out what else it could be.
With a previous crown, I was sensitive for a few months afterward, so does that mean I should wait a few weeks (or months) to see if this clears up? Could it be that I take longer to "heal"? Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thank you.
Dr-
I got my permanent crown placed on my upper molar on the left side. It was fine when I left the office, they adjusted my bite, and I was on my way. It has been a week and now I have excruiating pain. I cannot even touch it with my tongue without horrible pain. I cannot eat now or chew. It feels very tight and I can barely function. What could be going on? I can't sleep at night, because the pain is so intense.
Thanks
you would think I dentist would know how to fix a painful tooth is that what they study
I was wondering about something about 4 years ago i broke two large peices off my front teeth i did infact have nerve damage in both...i couldnt afford a root canal or crown so i got temporary caps on them.. why haven't i experienced any pain yet? how long can it go on before i experience pain? they only gave me 4 month before they died but that was 4 years ago..and still i dont experience pain.
I got my first crown about a month and a half ago. I don't remember experiencing any problems with the temporary crown, but two days after getting the permanent I started having intense, chronic, aching pain that has one center in my tooth and then kind of radiates out only to refocus in another really strong burst of pain in my ear that flows out to fill that side of my head. I call it chronic because while the tooth is sensitive to cold and sometimes gets sore when I chew, the pain I described above is much worse and seems to be a constant, only going away temporarily when I take a painkiller. I have been taking advil around the clock, even waking up in the middle of the night having to take it, which I know is unhealthy. It's starting to affect my stomach, but the tooth pain and headache is too intense to stand. Has anyone else experienced long term, constant pain like this after a crown? I've talked to my dentist on the phone about the pain a few times and she says it could be because I grind/clench my teeth but then also says I might need a root canal. She never seems really sure that I need a root canal though since heat isn't bothering me and advil can alleviate most of the pain...it almost is like she's going to let me make the call. I am going to see her tomorrow for a scheduled cleaning and while I am terrified at the possibility of getting my first root canal, and definitely don't want to get one unless it's necessary, I don't think I can stand this pain much longer. Any stories about similar experiences or info about how long post-crown pain can last and still be considered "normal" would be greatly appreciated!
When I was younger, I had a serious cavity (that I never noticed) that required filling in my back left bottom tooth. The entire inside of the tooth down to almost the bottom was exposed and the tooth was filled in. A couple years later, the outside of the tooth chipped slightly and I was told I needed a crown. The entire process is a phobia of mine (needles, drills, and pressure in your mouth)The crown was placed on and since, has randomly been throbbing ("without rhyme or reason"). I called and asked my dentist to which he told me that it was completely normal and my tooth was just trying to recover. The next day (today) I took a bite of something cold and I literally felt like my jaw was going to fall off. It was such an intense sensitivity that I have never felt before. I'm nervous that I will need a root canal and not sure if I should wait it out like my dentist said or to call back and schedule something that may help me.
This is a great explanation. My pain occurs high up (under nostril) after I bite down on something too hard. Is a root canal in order despite normal x-rays? The throbbing pain has been quite bad and lasts several weeks.
I had a crown done on 3 days ago how long before it settles down
THE DENTIST IS GONE, shuthefucup all of you :) don't u c?
maybe he'll be back and whack your teeth out of your mouth.
i have a bed tooth and have had a crown on it for 2 weeks and i have pain and the roof of my mouth is starting to hurt as well is there a way i can have the bad toooth taking out and a crown over it? no matter what they do the pain always comes back
Two weeks ago, my dentist finished replacing a crown that was originally put on several years ago by another dentist. I got a root canal the first time the crown was done. The problem was that an infection developed under it so the dentist did another root canal and put on a new crown. Since then and my tooth has been in increasing pain and when I flossed last night the ache was unbearable. I am going to my dentist next week but I cannot help but feel he did something wrong.
After all that I've read, I'm reasonably certain the pain I am experiencing is from the nerve. My question is, will the nerve eventually die? And if so, how long will that process take? I am not willing to have a root canal done at this point. The pain has been so severe that my vote is to remove the tooth. My dentist is out off the office until next week but you can be sure I'll be on the phone on Monday morning discussing my options!
the front 4 teeth had uppishness and gaps, so I did crown. no one should do crown for cosmetic reasons. I am suffering... irritations in mouth... ... but the dentist should have stopped me from doing such a stupid thing :(
Hi there,
I got two crowns together, never had nerve issues. these two are crowns on bottom right last ones.
they hurt like hell for 3 weeks then it completely away. I ate gummy bears last night and the pressure was nuts. All day i had non stop pain. unbelievable pain. Took 200 mg celebrex and i have to say i still have thumping in my tooth area.. it still hurts.
what are your thoughts.. I've been thinking of getting the crowns completely removed and forget the whole thing. Screw the rootcanal that so many talk about and sometimes gets worse.
I am a 20 year old and I had a root canal when I was twelve. Two months ago I experienced throbbing and sensitivity so I finally put a crown on it. The throbbing also got better. Now I have extreme sensitivity when I walk outside or drink something cold and it throbs. I obviously do not have a nerve any more so what could it be? By the way I am in college and have no access to a dentist for a while.
Thank you so much for this post! It explained exactly what I needed to know!
Matthew Verbin, It's 3:00. Your friend, RUsty Shackleford.
I had a root canal done and the crown placed on a pre-molar. 4 weeks later eating and drinking hot stuff this crown is hurting. How can that be if the nerve has been removed?
I told my Dentist and he is convinced that I am making this up because God forbid that he might be wrong or doesn't want to take responsibility.
It isn't the adjacent tooth because when I thumb on the crown it hurts. When I eat nuts or any hard food it hurts when chewing on it.
What can cause this?
Hi,i have a 4 tooth bridge at the front of my mouth (top). 5 years ago i fell and broke a bit off so had to have it all replaced. I had pain and sensitivity for a few weeks which went away until 2 months ago when i got an abscess that started to spread. I took amoxicillin and it subsided.
I dont have any pain at the moment in the tooth or gum or otherwise, so i think maybe it was caused by the trauma as oppose to a cavity but i can't afford to have the bridge replaced, I still need to deal with the abscess, what are my options?
I have a crown and root canal treatment on a teeth, for over a year Now. Never had problems with it until recently. Last time was in march, I was feeling that teeth was bothering me and when I bite I felt like the crown was high. At that time I was on midterms exams and stressed and with a lot of tension. Now, 2 month after, samething is happening again. I'm on exams, stressed and with a lot of pressure, I'm starting to think that when I'm being pressure something happens to me teeth. Is this possible? I'm going to the dentist on Friday. Last time they said it may of been a cavity I had on the bottom, that everything was connected and that could be it, after 3 days the pain was gone.. Help please!!
To Karen,
I can say from personal experience - I have 17 caps and more than 3 root canals - that sensitivity is normal, for some caps for the first year.
I had 2 that were VERY sensitive when I bit down. It felt like a knife stabbing me in the jaw when I bit down on them. VERY sharp pain. This lasted for about 2 months after they were done but what I did was not to chew with them, and avoided cold stuff. Took Acetametaphine for pain. By not chewing on them, and avoiding cold stuff, it allowed them to "settle down" and now I have no problems with them.
Cold sensitivity is VERY normal for me on ALL non-root canal treated teeth, IF a piece of ice hits the metal part of a cap I can be in pain for over a week. Acetametaphine really helped me cope with the pain. Aspirin didn't seem to work AT ALL for me for this though!
Again, I will say that I NEVER had this cold sensitivity in a cap with a root canal though!
I just had a crown placed on a bottom back molar tooth 3 days ago. The crown feels like too thick on side, which is the one against my cheek. I don't remember how big was my natursl tooth before crown. Is it typical for crowns too eel like big for a while after placement? Or, is my crown really somewhat thick toward one side (height and inside face seems to be just fine). If so, can a crown be filed at its side to reduce the bulkiness? What options do I have? Am I just being too picky?
2011,June I had a crown placed left lower side I had to keep going back. I was given a few shots to numb during procedure. Here's the problem my mouth is very watery, sounds crazy but seems like my salvia is more on left side I did go to my Dr,. but I have no ear infection slight swollen gland. I just feel it had to due with the shots. What's going on ?
i have just had a cap put on to day in till i get the crown and now i am in pain with it wot can i do 2 stop the pain help plz
Hi- I recently had two temp crowns put on and for the last week I've had severe throbbing pains. I've gone back to the dentist 3 days. The first, she adjusted my bite. The second, she re-adjusted and filed it down and the third she cleaned out between the two crowns because there was some lose cement. I am still in pain. She's taken x-rays and cannot see anything wrong with the tooth. My permanent crown should be in next week and I am not sure what to do.
Ali
Dear Dr. i hope you have some suggestion for me..i had gone to the dentist on Monday to get my jaw filling done..After he did that and my numbness started to ware out i started experiencing some pain with a head ache. SInce than i'm on Advil every 5hrs...next day i called the Dr. so he suggested to come in for a visit ..but right before that my same tooth chipped off and now it hurst more. i havent eaten any hard food. all i had since the day of the dentist is soup or milk...DId my dentice did something wrong? Did he drill my tooth too much? thanks...
I had a crown on my from tooth 9 months ago, and it recently came off. The dentist drilled my tooth down and I was wondering if she drilled it down too much because when my crown came off so did the drilled part of my tooth. I asked her about it and she said it was because my root was too short and it wan't stron enough to hold my crown. Any ideas as to how thin a tooth is drilled down to get a crown? Mine was as thin as a toothpick!
Hey, My wife had a root canal about 3-4 weeks ago and the permanent crown about 2 weeks ago. Now she says that it feels like the crown is too tight. She said that it feels like a vice on her tooth. I didn't think that she should feel any pain with a root canal. Any suggestions?
i had a crown put on my back tooth about 7 months ago. food has been getting under the crown ever since. I went back to the dentist, and he says i dont haave a cavity, but because i missed a cleaning, thats why, along with my teeth shifting because i have a tooth missing on that side. I have a tooth ache and i know its from the food geeting under the crown. even when i floss, the floss goes under the crown. i feel tshe crown does not fit, and needs to be redone. My question is ( is there suppose to be food going under the crown every time i eat?)
Hi I had two crowns done. One in the top front and another in the bottom left on top of a root canal. After a year plus my gum by the bottom left crown sweeled into a hard bump and the pain was very bad. Dentist said I need to get the teeth pulled out. Do I have any other options
I have just had a temp crown fitted to bottom molar and will have permant one fitted in a few weeks time. I am seriously thinking of having the tooth removed after reading all comments,
Can any one give me a good reason why I should not have it removed
had a crown done two years ago felt like it was too high from the start didnt have pain but i avoided chewing on this side. recently i had a cavity fixed in the tooth next to that crown, after that things got painful. i couldnt floss in between the tooth before or the tooth after the crown. when pulling the floss up and out, half way up the pain is excrutiating. two trips to the dentist for leveling didnt make any difference, he seems stumped and can only suggest a root canal, at this point i just want to pull it. any suggestions?
Yeah the problem is that all this costs thousands! Dentists have people who are in pain over a barrel and charge astronomical prices for dental work.
This was an incredibly informative article and an entertaining thread. There are some angry people out there! I've had 13 (+/-) fillings and 3 root canals despite a very consistent brushing and flossing routine. Only today have I had to do my own research, for I developed pain only AFTER my new crown was placed, and it makes perfect sense that the procedure was the "last straw" that triggered the pain; complications were inevitable, yet doing a root canal first would have meant possibly tossing away $1000 (even AFTER insurance covers half).... wheeee.
For what it is worth, I had something that I didn't see mentioned anywhere above.
My temporary crown was fine for about 3 days, and then I started developing pain, which became *extreme* levels by the time I went back to have the permanent put in. It turned out that I had been grinding, and the softer temporary had cracked. It allowed bacteria to enter, and the area under the temporary was badly infected.
Antibiotics, and a replacement temporary, which was applied with cement that is also antibacterial in nature, were enough to put me right.
The dentist waited another week with the new temporary to ensure that the infection had truly gone before placing the new permanent crown. It has been three years pain free now.
My dentist told me I needed at cap on #30. I said sure. I have horrific pain now as I had no pain before. Going on 2 weeks. I have been back to the office twice. He tested the tooth for need for root canal and was negative for that. He says I could hurt like this for 3 months. WHAT!!! I would have never done this had I known. Why? Wish I knew what was going on. I'm tempted to just get it yanked out. I was planning on having him cap 6 of my front teeth for cosmetic reasons now I'm scared to death. The pain runs that side of my mouth and up to my ear. He says I have no infection either. I am taking amoxicillin anyway. Has been 9 days of pure pain :( wha to do and what about the future will this happen with the front teeth too?
i had a dental crown placed on my front tooth 6 months ago... and i recently went to the dentist and i had to get dental implant on the tooth right next to my crowned tooth... well my new implant as my dentist says its beautiful but my crowned tooth is getting bad the gum around it is very red and swollen.. the dentist took x rays but there is nothing going on the tooth he said... so he said he doesnt know whats going on so he just gave me a cleaning but my gums are not better!!! now he said to wait and see!!! what is this he doesnt know whats going on, can you help please im done wasting money on dentist!!!
hi ive jus has root canal treatment done and the dentist said that he has put a medicine in and a temporary filling. he said that he will put the proper filling in next week but for now he has put some medicine. i can taste the medicine ... how can i get rid of the taste?
Sounds like a great rationalization.
I had a root canal done through an old cap 9 months ago. two weeks later the dentist tried to remove the old crown and it was very difficult, requiring over two hours of drilling to try and crack the old crown off. he got it off and two hours later i went back to him with my face and neck, throat and ears so painful ,and filled with what felt like crushed ice under my skin. thught it was an allergic reaction gave me benedryl. didnt help. sent me to the er. took xrays. ended up in the ICU for three days with subcantanious emphysema, trapped air from drilling, between my body tissues.
Has any one experienced any bad smells or bad taste coming from their crown? I had some repair work done on my crown 2weeks ago and now there is a really bad smell coming from it and a bad taste in my mouth.
i have four dental crowns on my upper jaw on the first four front teeth. Now i want to use a dental clip on the upper jaw.is that possible with my dental crowns?
Yeah, I just had some work done on my lower molar the past few days. The dentist found a crack on my molar and thought maybe that was causing the pain. So she recommended a Crown. So right now I have a temporary crown. And it hurts still. I'm afraid I will be needing a root canal.
My wife had the same experience. Nothing wrong on the outside, looked perfectly normal. But the verdict was that she needed a root canal. =(
tum sabne kya tatty khai hai jo pagal bano so ooh la la chuhon!!!!!!!!!!
My tooth felt just fine until the crown was placed. After 3 days of pain, especially with hot and cold, I returned and he shaved my tooth down. Three weeks later it's still hurting 24/7 and i'm downing Tylenol and Ibuprofen RTC. I called my dentist but no return. I want to change dentists, how long is it safe to wait?
I had a cracked tooth that my dentist crowned...had extreme pain sent me for a root canal which they put a hole through my new crown to do the root canal only to end up having the tooth pulled a couple weeks later since the pain stayed unbearable. So now I had to have a bridge to fill in. Doing this the dentist needed to crown the tooth in front and behind to have a way to attach the bridge to my mouth. So they ground down the two teeth that had fillings in them and put on a temporary bridge over the span on both teeth and the hole. During this process i could not chew on that side due to sensitivity and now I have my new bridge on which was extrememly painful during the process of taking off the old and putting the new bridge on. NOw I am having cold and hot sensitivity to the front tooth and aching. There was not an issue with the two teeth to attach the bridge to until they were ground down. the back tooth is fine it is the front tooth with the sensitivity. All of this process has been going on since 6/11 and I am tired of pain. The original tooth was cracked and should never have had a crown but pulled and then would not have had to have the root canal on a cracked tooth. Now I may have to have a root canal again on the other tooth. Of course, all of these screw ups keeps using up my dental plan for the whole year leaving me without coverage for anything else. Why if my front tooth was not damaged nor painful before is it now? I am thinking Dr. needs to be paying for my root canal at this point. Trying to be patient but have had it and so upset.
22nd Feb 2012.
I have a large gold crown on my upper right second to last molar and it is a firm fix, too firm for comfort really and there is clearly a need to get behind the crown but it simply will not budge and the thought of having to pay another few hundred for another just does not seem right. Is there a trick of the trade that could be brought into play in order to ease this crown of the tooth without dislodging the host molar out of its socket.
ASAP PLEASE ANYONE IS GETTING SCARY.
I have to have root canal done under a new crown of two weeks. This explained how this could have happened. Tks.
I have some area of the behind of my front two teeth missin and there is a colour differentiation caused because of it, i have gotten that area filled with some tooth cement matter about 6 or 7 months ago, that matter has come off and my front two teeth need to be fixed, if i go in for crowning (caps) is there a posibility that i might need to undergo a root canal?
I just had 2 crowns placed on my upper right molars. With the the temp crowns and the perm crowns I have extreme pain on my LOWER right molars. Any ideas why the lower molars hurt when the work was done on the upper molars? My bite seems fine.
Thank you for this great information! I have a really great dentist, http://somersetdentalarts.com, who numbed me really well so I didn't feel a thing after I got the shot. Although, I am having pain now and this information has really helped me understand why. Thanks!
Is there a general guide to which dentists use to charge people for dentistry work? I've been to different private dentists over the years and it seems the prices are as varied as a roller coaster.
How do you know how much to charge someone for lets say, a general filling? including a needle for the pain, the drilling work, and the fuji filling etc.
OMG it &%*ing hurts!!!!!!! Im only 12 hours out of the upper left last. 34 i think?
Holy shit a molar crown is killer... it feels like someone punched me and knocked a tooth out.... technically yes that happened....AAARRRGGGG!
I have a lidocane gargle....how can this help topically/orally.....

I had crown work down on 6 bottom teeth and 6 on top. Now it is 3 months and the 6 teeth on bottom been hurting. THe eye tooth is more painful. I went to dentist and she fixed the bite. I really am tired of this teeth thing. I had 12 teeth pulled already with 11 dental implants. I went to endond this morning too. HE says I have brittle teeth. HE doesnt see anything wrong with the 2 teeth he evalutated. Doesnt mean he says nothing is wrong because he knows how my teeth easy to fracture. I wanted to get my last 6 front bottom teeth pulled with a flipper and implants. Oral Surgeon was a jerk! It is my teeth. I have the right to do what I want. I dont want too but I cant stand the teeth pain. I regret this work. I shouldnt of done it. Now who am I going to get to listen to me.
During an annual cleaning a molar, refilled in 2007 with porcelain, showed a very small cavity on the side facing my left cheek. The dentist came after the cleaning to approve the work and saw the cavity and said to watch and clean well daily to keep it at bay. This year, the Hygienist said I would need a crown. I followed up with a dentist a week later to see if the cavity could be filled. The dentist said it could, "however, the tooth has a crack in the enamel due to too much filling in the tooth". He said I could wait for the crown as the tooth was not too bad. Months, in fact. Because there was a "special" on crowns I decided to pay out-of-pocket, as my insurance did not cover crowns, and have the tooth done. They prepared it the same day. I had to wait a 3 week period with a temporary crown as the permanent piece took that long to make. (first time I encountered that. I have many crowns). The tooth hurt constantly and I went back to see the dentist. The owner was on the schedule that day and saw him. He said he could freeze the area and re-do the temporary as it had a space that did not seal. I didn't want to go through the pain and discomfort of the shot, etc. so asked if I just took Asprin, as it took away the pain, if that would be okay. He said the tooth would not be damaged if I left it that way until the permanent crown. Well, the crown has been put on two weeks ago this coming Tuesday. It still hurts. It has subsided quite a lot but not totally comfortable.
Should it have taken this long? I am afraid, now, to even go back to this dentist.
I have got 4 crowns bottom front permanent put in on the 28th of march. I am in lot of discomfort sensitive wise. I have never had the problem with temp. Wondering if this normal or the dentist didn't do it right.
I had a crown on my front tooth which already had a root canal. A few days after the permanent crown was put on, the are below my bottom lip has swelled so much that I bite my mouth all the time. My dentist says it is NOT connected to the placement of the crown. What do you think?
Hello.
I had a crown put on a lower molar about 5 months ago that had previously had a cracked cusp. Prior to crown prep and while I had the temp crown on, I experienced no pain or sensitivity (except for when the temp crown fell off, and the pain went away immediately after recementing the temp). Immediately after having the permanent crown put on, I suddenly had severe cold sensitivity in the crowned tooth. I continued to experience cold sensitivity for about six weeks. Gradually, the sensitivity subsided, and I have did not have any pain or sensitivity in the crowned tooth until last night.
Last night, I suddenly developed intense cold sensitivity while sucking in cold air. This was odd, as I had eaten slightly cold strawberries (they had been in the fridge) with the tooth for dinner, and did not experience any problems chewing the fruit. I took some ibuprofen, which helped some, but the tooth continued to be slightly sensitive to cold air for the rest of the evening. Interestingly, when I took the ibuprofen with slightly cold water, the cool water did not bother my tooth either. My tooth seemed to be fine when I woke up this morning, and I haven't noticed anything too unusual about it today. The crowned tooth did hurt slightly when I ate a popsicle and let a piece of ice sit directly on top of the tooth..... but, I think the ice had pretty much the same effect on my other non-crowned teeth too..... So, I'm not sure if I should be concerned or not.
Any idea what could cause this kind of transient sensitivity? Does this mean there's some kind of latent infection and that it is inevitably going to flare up again in the future?
The crown is all-zirconia. When I got the crown put on, the dentist said he can not patch up a hole in it with composite material if I ever need a root canal because the composite will not adhere to the zirconia, and he said it's also nearly impossible to get these kinds of crowns off. He said he wasn't concerned about it, though, because he didn't see any signs of infection and didn't think my tooth would ever need a root canal....
Does it sound like my tooth needs a root canal, and if so, what happens now that I have a crown that can't be repaired or removed???
Hello, Within they last 4 months i received a root canal. Everything had been healing fine until tonight when i just finished eating something semi hard and this hard object fell from where my root canal had taken place.
Is this a serious matter? Please respond

sir help me plz. i have trimmed my tooth for crown. now its so much sensitive. it will be alright after the placement of crown or not...im very much upset... does root canal is necessary for this procedure or not...
Please advise; I've had a bridge put in 4 years ago, and the two healthy support teeth were crowned. A couple of years ago one of these teeth became sensitive to cold. Then I developed a very mild constant ache that lasted a few days then went away. The dentist said the x-rays looked normal and it's just sensitivity. I've had a number of check ups and x-rays done since then and everything looked normal. Now, that ache is back for the last day and a half. It's very very mild but it's there and constant, it doesn't really bother me much on its own but I'm really afraid it's signaling something serious. Could a dentist have missed decay under a crown during several examinations, and could it be going on for that long and intermittently if it was actually decay or nerve damage? Or does it sound like something else like teeth grinding? The ache doesn't seem localized to one tooth to me, more like that general area (bottom left). The teeth were sensitive to cold all these years, but the ache only came on that once and now. I have a check-up scheduled for next week with a new dentist (we moved), but I'm terrified of it progressing into more severe pain till then. Please reassure me!
I just cemented a crown for a pt 4 months ago, today she came to office with pain, took X-ray big parl at the apex with pain! Do u think I did some thing wrong,
Dear Dr.
Thank you so much for the excellent explanation about an asymptomatic cracked tooth becoming symptomatic (pain) after crowning procedure. In addition to possible more susceptibility of a cracked tooth to “traumatical” trimming preparation for crown, you mentioned that bacteria could be introduced to the root through the cracks during trimming process. I am wondering if a dentist should thoroughly clean the trimmed tooth with solution containing antibiotics before cementing the permanent crown, or any other approach to prevent potential root infection post permanent crown. Thanks
I had a crown done 4.5 months ago on molar 31 which was decayed but no pain. Initially after temporary crown placed I had terrible pain in jaw directly under the molar. I had to take ibufrofen every 6-8 hrs. The pain even woke me at night to take ibuprofen. The pain eased after 1 month of constant ibuprofen and amoxil. I then had the permanent crown placed 1.5 months ago and had severe pain again that continued until I could not stand it anymore and had the tooth pulled. I was very upset. I had taken augmentin for 7 days also before the extraction. Why did this happen? A crack could not be seen on xray but I had had enough of that pain. Since this seemed to be nerve related will I still have pain post extraction until that area heals?_
I had a similar issue with sensitivity and our right pain. After a week on an steroid the inflammation went away and the pain and sensitivity subsided. Aleve, and Ibuprofen did nothing! I mean nothing! Next step is a root canal I hope the inflammation will stay gone but you never know. No issues with silver filling at all but the dentist wanted to replace before he crowned it. I know next time, if ain't broke don't fix it!
What I don't get is, if there is any doubt as to the health of the tooth, which there is bound to be as it needs a crown, why do dentists not routinely put in an intermediate sedating pack to calm the nerve. I have now had 3 root fillings done and each time, it was known that the teeth were compromised, and one of those times, despite me saying and saying the the tooth hurt, asking for the crown to be put on temporarily, it was cemented in permanently and had to be drilled through for the root canal, and the crown eventually replaced. GRRRRR!
